Edited 4 years agoI had a chance to visit Alafia Brewing Co this past weekend for the first time while visiting the area. With so much great beer available in the greater Tampa region to compare, I think Alafia has a long way to go. On the positive side, the bartender was extremely cordial and attentive. I appreciate the quality service given. The space is comfortable with an interesting showcase of local art. In terms of the beer, the first thing I noticed is that 27 beers, ciders, and an "imperial seltzer" is a really ambitious lineup. I tried two flights of four beers to get an idea of the strengths and weaknesses of the brewery. On the whole, I felt the beers missed the mark on the intended styles. Many of the beers were undercarbonated and lifeless. Head retention was minimal, at best. The lagers tasted like they were rushed through the process, with way too much diacetyl coming through in the Pilsner. The Rye IPA lacked bitterness and hop aroma that would indicate that's it's an IPA, and I couldn't taste any distinctive rye character. The saison had the right color, but lacked the aromas, esters, flavors, head retention, or high level of carbonation associated with saisons. The Octoberfest missed on color and flavor profile for a Marzen, and it left a strange coffee-like aftertaste. The barleywine was thin and watery. It lacked the rich flavor, full mouthfeel, and bitterness I expect from a barleywine, especially a barrel-aged version. I wish Alafia the greatest success in becoming a destination for local beer drinkers south of Tampa. However, it's going to be a challenge to develop that loyalty if the beer quality remains low. I hope they're able to work on consistent recipes, improving their brewing processes, and can solicit honest feedback about their beers to make a higher-quality product. The potential exists, but the execution isn't there yet.

4 years agoThis is the #1 brewery of choice so far since I've been here in the St Pete/Tampa area. It is so totally chilled out, laid back, just mellow and cool. It's a simple space with nice art on the walls, good service and... finally, to the point, solid, per-style beers and a GOOD selection. Finally, a brewery here that knows fruited sours and IPAs are not the benchmark of a great brewhouse. There was a musical duo on Sunday afternoon. I had a flight of two, yes TWO saisons, a vienna lager and a barrel aged rye ale. All were spot on. Flight of 4 stellar beers with with tip $12. If I didn't convince you, all the other 5-star ratings should sway you. Yea, it's a hike, but it's worth it!

4 years agoCame around 2pm for a late lunch or snack but turns out they don’t start serving food until 6pm so we just had one beer and left for another brewery. Not sure why they would give us the food menu to look at. Staff was friendly and this place would probably be fun in the evening when they have live music or trivia! The waitress said they’re working on setting up an outdoor space as well

5 years agoStopped by on a Sunday night with the family. Really great experience. Family friendly, they have an area setup with bean bag chairs and tv for the kids. The beer was great, and almost too many choices. There was a live singer, who was fantastic. And the food, let me tell you we got there right after the kitchen closed, but they still were able to feed us with a modified menu. Really shows they are willing to go the extra mile for their customers. The food was fantastic! They are pretty new, but if they keep up the attitude that they have, they will become the best brewery to go to for miles!

5 years agoThis fairly new brewery offers a wide enough selection of beverages that everyone in your group will find something they like. The staff are very nice and helpful. Their food menu is surprising for a place like this. They have lasagna and it’s really good. They offer live entertainment and the performers are great. We will definitely be back soon.

5 years agoNice place and some really great beers. Great people and good food also. This place is a welcome addition to Gibsonton, especially after the closing of Four Stacks In Gibsonton and Apollo Beach (understandable). It's a bit out of the way for my commute but will be a regular spot.

5 years agoLove this new brewery for the Riverview area! Don't judge the outside for the inside and beer! Dan makes awesome beer! Jesse the bartender should be singing with a label but on the side pours beers. Please come to keep this new brewery in business.
